More Than Just Fish ‘N Chips at this Ossining Eatery

More Than Just Fish ‘N Chips at this Ossining Eatery

When you think of fish and chips, the British staple instantly comes to mind. But at Brothers Fish & Chips in Ossining, the emphasis is on creating a healthier version of the traditional fish and chips takeaway that we’ve come to know, along with a variety of modern fish dishes that will have you coming back for more.

The takeaway and an adjoining restaurant are located in a strip mall on the outskirts of town and is owned by brothers Kevin and Elmer Oliveros, who moved to the Ossining area in 2006 from Guatemala.

Both men grew up on a farm where seasonal ingredients were regularly used to create their family’s everyday meals.

Today, it serves as the basis for all that they do at Brothers Fish & Chips.

Even their slogan, “Eat Fish. Live Longer.,” is woven into everything they do.

“In Guatemala, we ate a lot of fish with rice and beans,” said Elmer Oliveros, recalling the days as a youngster when he would watch his mother cook.

That created a yearning in Oliveros, who also owns Rissoto Italian Restaurant & Bar in Thornwood, to one day become a professional cook.

In 2008, he went to work at the takeaway, putting in his time at the front counter and cooking in the kitchen.

When he took over the business in 2011, he and his brother decided to turn the takeaway into something that reflected their passion for cooking and creativity.

Grilled salmon, shrimp and tuna were quickly added to the menu and the word got out that this takeaway was different from others in the area.

“I like to cook my own way,” said Oliveros, referring to the imagination that he and his brother put into the business. Having their own restaurant also gives them more freedom to experiment with different dishes.

On the takeout menu, you’ll find a number of classic fish dishes such as fried bass, flounder, cod, shrimp and whiting, all freshly sourced daily from the Fulton Fish market in the Bronx.

The first four dishes are fried in a special homemade beer batter mix that the brothers lovingly create from carefully sourced craft beers, some of which include beers from the Captain Lawrence Brewery in Elmsford, the Sing Sing Kill Brewery in Ossining, Lawson’s Finest Liquids from Vermont, as well as beers from the Revision Brewing Company of Nevada, to name a few.

Combination dishes are also available from the take-out menu.

You can also order a number of sandwiches from The Sandwich Gallery as well as healthy salads, with the choice of adding  grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon or calamari.

In 2015, the brothers closed the takeaway for several weeks so they could create the restaurant next door. The result is a beautifully decorated eatery that serves up high-quality cuisine.

There is also a full bar at the restaurant, where you can order wine, beer and cocktails.

While running a restaurant is enough to keep Oliveros busy every day, he still loves to cook, crafting the kinds of fish dishes that not only taste good but look good, too.
