If you’re reading this issue of Westchester Guest magazine, I’m guessing that you are either visiting our region this winter or you already live here.
Either way, don’t let the cold, wintry weather get you down.
There are plenty of things to do in a short period of time — 24 hours to be exact — in Central Westchester, which includes White Plains, the hub of Westchester County, as well as the other bedroom communities of Briarcliff, Hawthorne, Pleasantville, Scarsdale, and Thornwood.
In fact, there’s something for everyone in this part of the county, including history enthusiasts, nature lovers, foodies, shoppers, and those seeking a bit of rest and relaxation.
Relive the Past in White Plains
If you’re a lover of Revolutionary War history (and there’s plenty of it to be found around Westchester), you’ll discover that White Plains was a pivotal location during the war.
Each year, the White Plains Historical Society hosts a commemoration ceremony at the Jacob Purdy House located at 60 Park Avenue in White Plains.
The farmhouse, built in 1721, served as General George Washington’s headquarters during the early days of the battle. It was moved to its present location to avoid demolition. You can tour the restored farmhouse by calling 914-328-1776.
The Jacob Purdy House is one of several attractions worth seeing on the White Plains Heritage Trail, which takes in close to 24 historic sites in an 11-mile loop through the city, West Harrison, and North Castle.
Some of the others include a monument commemorating the site of the original county courthouse on South Broadway, where in July 1776 the New York Provincial Congress accepted the Declaration of Independence and declared New York an official state.
Stones from the original courthouse foundation are incorporated into the mortar obelisk.
The Battle of White Plains itself is commemorated in a small park located at Whitney and Battle Avenues, which claims to be the actual site of the battle. It is a short walk from downtown White Plains.
The Miller House, located in North White Plains, also featured prominently during this period. Historians believe that Washington also used this 18th-century Rhode Island-style farmhouse as his headquarters.
You can discover more about this important White Plains historical attraction — and see its contents by calling 914-231-4500 to arrange a visit.

Trails that are Perfect for Winter
While the winter months are justifiably bleak since the days are shorter, colder and darker, there’s no reason you can’t explore the great outdoors while visiting Central Westchester for 24 hours.
Here are some of our recommendations.
Cranberry Lake Preserve, White Plains
This 190-acre park has been a haven for migratory birds, turtles, and dragonflies, and it is an ideal place for hiking. The area includes a lake, cliffs, and scrubland, as well as a mixed hardwood forest.
Weinberg Nature Center and Saxon Woods Loop, Scarsdale
This 4.6-mile loop starts off in the Weinberg Nature Center and is easy enough for all skill levels. Before you set off on your hike, be sure to visit the center, which is an ideal destination for little ones.
The center hosts several events throughout the year and houses a variety of animals that children can view and interact with. They include 4 chincillas, a rabbit, 2 guinea pigs, a blue tongue skink, 7 geckos, 5 snakes and much more.
On Jan. 22 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the center is hosting “Ice Lanterns, Hot Chocolate and a History of Human uses of Fire and Ice.” All ages are welcome, with children 2 and under admitted for free. Call 914-722-1160 to register or visit the center’s website at www.weinbergnature.org.
South County Trailway, Elmsford
The South County Trailway, which you can access in Elmsford, is a 12.5-mile trail that ends in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Bring your dog or have fun with the kids on this moderately-trafficked trek. The trail is paved, but can be bumpy at times, so use caution.
